There are a myriad of hair removal methods available, differing in how fast your hair will eventually grow back. Let’s start off with the 3 basics of hair removal methods available: temporary hair removal, temporary hair reduction and permanent hair removal. Within each method a number of different techniques are used to achieve hair removal or reduction.

Temporary Hair Removal

  • Shaving

Do you remember your first time gripping that shaver, thinking “Am I going to cut myself?” Well, shaving is the fastest, cheapest and easiest way to remove unwanted hair. Shaving cuts the hair off at the surface instead of going to the root, so usually hair will grow back in a day to 3 days. Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not result in thicker, darker hair nor does shaving causes hair to grow faster or slower. Shaving is easy as it can be done in your own home.

  • Plucking/Tweezing

Plucking or tweezing works best on your eyebrows and not on areas such as legs or armpits. Removing hair with tweezers require the hair to be long enough to be grasped. It is an effective way to remove hair as it removes hair deeper in the roots but can be very time consuming.

Temporary Hair Reduction

  • Waxing

When waxing is mentioned, images of screams and red skin come to mind. Waxing works by applying a sticky substance on the desired area for hair removal and removes the hair from the root. It usually lasts longer than shaving, around three weeks and leaves your skin feeling smooth. Waxing works on all body areas from legs to the face but the most important factor to take in is the pain. If you’re one with low pain tolerance, waxing for the first time might make you think twice when it comes to the second time. After a couple of times, it’ll hurt a bit less.

  • Sugar Waxing

Sugar waxing is an alternative to waxing. A thick substance made from lemon juice, sugar and water is spread on the skin in the direction of hair growth. A cloth or paper strip is used to quickly pull off the hair in the opposite direction of the hair growth. The advantage of this method over traditional waxing is the clean up. The sugar wax can be easily washed off with water and the substance is water-soluble.

Permanent Hair Removal

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Doesn’t this sound like some instrument from an alien sci-fi movie? Don’t worry it isn’t. Intense pulsed light or IPL for short is a hair removal method that works by removing bodily hair using non-laser high intensity light sources. Still sounds foreign? Let’s simplify it. The light source is a broad wavelength of light which removes hair via light bursts of electrical current.

If you’re wondering what’s different between laser hair removal and IPL, to simplify it lasers are more painful than IPL.
